Otahuna Lodge, Christchurch

At the head of a secluded valley on New Zealand’s South Island is a place of “replenishment and refinement,” an elegant, historic country estate where guests receive the warmest welcome.

Otahuna Lodge offers five suites and two master suites. Each retains architectural features from the 19th century, such as ornate original fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows. All luxury suites offer super-king beds, fine custom-made linens, toiletries by Penhaligon’s of London, deep bathtubs and separate rain showers.

Activities at Otahuna Lodge range from thoroughly relaxing to highly energetic. The swimming pool draws guests on warm summer afternoons while the outdoor hot tub is the perfect place to unwind on a chilly evening, perhaps after a game of tennis, croquet or petanque. Strolling through woodlands, cycling or horse riding are all possible and bicycles can be borrowed to explore the country estate and neighbouring scenic lanes.

Further afield, there are day trips to enjoy. Favoured choices include a visit to world-class fishing rivers, the centre of Christchurch City or the harbour town of Akaroa.

While you're there:

  • Visit Christchurch, 20 minutes from the lodge. NZ’s second largest city is green and leafy, with historic stone buildings, galleries and museums.
  • Take a scenic helicopter flight - departing from the Lodge's own Great Lawn - and discover the spectacular mountain passes, glaciers and snow capped peaks of the Southern Alps.
  • Tour the extraordinary volcanic formations of the Banks Peninsula, visit the charming French settlement of Akaroa and cruise its harbour alongside the world’s smallest dolphins.
